The Bible teaches that when a person becomes a Christian, believing in the Lord Jesus Christ as his/her Savior, the Holy Spirit comes into that person’s life and takes up residence in their heart. From that moment on the Spirit carries out His ministry in the believer’s life. The Spirit’s ministry is a ministry of counsel, of assurance, and of sanctification. (Sanctification is the life-long process of transforming the believer’s character and conduct, bringing it more and more into conformity with that of Christ. This process culminates in a glorious perfection at the time of Christ’s return.)
Thus the Holy Spirit dwells in every believer’s heart and carries on His ministries in every believer’s life. But what does it mean to be “filled with the Spirit?” Is it something every Christian can experience; or is it an experience reserved for only a select few Christians? Is it a special anointing, with the Holy Spirit being poured out upon the believer; or is it the “gushing up” of the Spirit and His attributes from within the believer? Is it a “second blessing” that is bestowed upon the believer at a later point in his Christian life; or is it what the Bible would define as normal, healthy Christian living?
What is the Spirit-filled life? How can a Christian experience the Spirit-filled life? What are the characteristics of the Spirit-filled life? These are the things discussed in the Bible study course on The Spirit-Filled Life.
